Edith Cowan University
Roseworth Primary School and Edith Cowan University have developed a partnership which aims to enhance the opportunities for teachers and students at our school. The partnerships allows our own teachers and administration and ECU pre-service teachers to work together to improve the teaching and learning opportunities at our school. Through this strong collaboration, research can be undertaken, best practice teaching can be developed and highlighted, and much can be learned about the way in which we approach each learning opportunity for students. The ECU Fogarty Professional Learning Centre is a wonderful facility that enables many opportunities to explore teaching techniques and to allow teachers to reflect and self-assess their own teaching practice. The students at our school are already benefiting significantly from being able to access this facility.
Another aspect of the ECU partnership worth highlighting is the collaboration that is being undertaken in the area of Literacy. Roseworth students have been a part of the Literacy Coaching initiative offered by ECU lecturers. Identified early childhood students gained individual literacy coaching sessions from ECU pre-service teachers. These sessions proved highly successful with our students showing significant improvement in their literacy skills from these individual sessions. The difference that literacy coaching made for our students will have lasting effects as these young students progress through the school.
ECU is committed to the development of pre-service teachers and want to offer their Graduate Diploma of Teaching students the best opportunity to develop the skills required to be an outstanding teacher. Roseworth Primary School and ECU offered a Teacher Residency program for pre-service teachers in the past. Roseworth and ECU provide an in-school residency model that allowed pre-service teachers to work alongside our own teachers throughout the school year. This model of teacher training provided both our school and ECU with the opportunity to provide extensive in-school experiences for our pre-service teachers and allowed the school to collaborate with the School of Education at Edith Cowan University. In 2016 ECU and Roseworth PS will commence a similar program called an internship whereby pre-service teachers complete their practicum and continue on with Roseworth PS after that to undertake a special project and/or work in the school on a part time voluntary basis.
