Roseworth Primary School - Independent Public School
Roseworth Primary became an Independent Public School (IPS) in 2009 as one of the first 34 schools to be awarded this status. The IPS prospectus was very attractive to our school as we believed that such an initiative would open up many possibilities to raise the profile of the school and further develop the strong capacities that the already existed in the school community.
At the forefront of Roseworth Primary School seeking IPS status was the flexibilities to make local decisions which would work best for our school and to be more flexible in developing solutions to meet the needs of our unique community.
The school was very keen to use the IPS initiative to assist us to improve the outcomes for our students and community.
Two years into the IPS journey, the school can reflect on the elements that have contributed to the successful implementation of IPS at Roseworth Primary School. These include:
The strength of the IPS model for Roseworth Primary School begins initially with the governance structure of our school. The development an IPS Board has gone a long way to extending the school’s circle of influence and raising the profile of the school in the wider education community.
Roseworth Primary School has also made very successful use of the one-line budget flexibilities. As a school already embracing faults and utilities management, the one-line budget was a natural progression for the school to exercise flexibility in financial management. With good financial management and careful decision making, Roseworth has been able to redirect funds towards early intervention programs, parenting support and significantly enhance the resources of the school. For example, each classroom has now been fitted with electronic whiteboards as has the staffroom and library. Grounds development including shade structures, playground equipment, curriculum resources and staff professional development have all been greatly enhanced due to the utilisation of savings and flexible funding. Roseworth has exercised the flexibility in staffing to the extent that many of our teaching and non-teaching staff have been appointed by the school. Roseworth is a school of choice for staff and we have significant interest in any position offered in the school.
The school’s profile in the wider community is growing and the many visitors from our own public school and interstate education systems and international educators all point to Roseworth Primary School being a school of significant interest due to its innovative practice.
